The event aimed to raise awareness about consuming eggs from cage-free hens and to help consumers understand the current system of battery-cage farming. It also encouraged the consumption of food produced in ways that respect animal welfare, promoting healthier and more sustainable dietary choices for Thai citizens. The seminar was inaugurated by Ms. Saree Ongsomwang, Secretary-General of the Consumer Council, at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

Dr. Wadchara Pumpradit, Director of Catalyst Co., Ltd., emphasized that consumers in Thailand and around the world are becoming increasingly conscious of food systems that prioritize safety, environmental sustainability, and animal ethics. He noted that Thai society must prepare and adapt to these emerging trends. He highlighted that cage-free egg farming is not only an ethical responsibility but also beneficial for consumer health and contributes to sustainability, presenting significant business opportunities for Thai farmers and entrepreneurs.

“Catalyst, the Consumer Council, and our network of partners support and promote efforts to enhance the capacity of producers and academia to transition toward cage-free egg farming, which will greatly benefit the public and Thailand as a whole,” said Dr. Wadchara.

Mr. Itboon Onwongsa, Deputy Secretary-General of the Consumer Council, stated that the council, established under the Consumer Organization Council Act of 2022, is dedicated to protecting consumer rights in all aspects. One of its missions is to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly consumption. Supporting cage-free eggs offers consumers ethical and sustainable choices, aligning with both Thai consumer protection laws and global consumer rights principles. These principles include The Right to Choose, ensuring access to quality goods at fair prices, and The Right to Be Informed, providing accurate and essential information for decision-making. This initiative also fosters consumption practices that respect animal welfare and support environmental sustainability.

The Deputy Secretary-General further mentioned that the council is working toward implementing cage-free egg labeling to assist consumers in making informed purchasing decisions. Additionally, it advocates for consumer representation on the National Egg Policy Board to establish fair policies for quality standards and egg pricing.

Associate Professor Dr. Jamroen Thiengtham from the Department of Animal Science at Kasetsart University explained that the concept of animals as sentient beings deserving fair treatment is widely recognized globally, supported by scientific evidence and ethical considerations. Collaborative efforts by institutions, the Animal Welfare Consortium, and experts nationwide have been advancing animal welfare standards through research and agricultural innovations.

Catalyst, in partnership with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and regional educational institutions, has been working to build understanding and enhance the capabilities of government agencies, academics, farmers, industry players, and other stakeholders. This preparation ensures a smooth transition toward practices that prioritize animal welfare while fostering global collaborations across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Additionally, representatives from the business sector, such as Phungnoi Bakery Co., Ltd., highlighted their commitment to socially responsible business practices. The company supports local farmers who prioritize animal welfare and has pledged to use 100% cage-free eggs by 2029. This commitment ensures not only the delivery of delicious and nutritious baked goods but also a significant contribution to improving the lives of laying hens.
